Only one of the current Free Massively Multiplayer Games. It it probably the most easy to find and start. The most monotonous and oddly additive game I have come across so far. A "runescape" is what you call any game that is just a knock off of anything else. You can call anything a "runescape" if it has any of the underlieing problems: 1. over crowding 2. Too many 12 years olds on all the time 3. General lag or bad graphics.

Ignoring all the other comments, this is seriously one of the most addicting things (not just games) that I have ever done. I seriously recommend that you never start playing. Recently a kid sued JaGex for $5000 because he didn't go to school or anything, he just played this game. An [MMORPG] loved by some, hated by others. Most people who critisize this game don't give it a good chance. I personally did not care for it the first six months of playing. I would've stopped if i didn't get addicted. Now after about 1 1/2 years, I'm really starting to like it. And also, people who complain about the [graphics] arent true gamers. Graphics do make up a game, but not COMPLETELY. I personally would give this game a 9 out of 10. I pay a few hundred dollars on gamecube and ps2 games a year, and I still end up liking runescape better. It's also free =)

Let me tell you, in my 19 years of life, those 4 years were the darkest, most desolate years ever. I quit soccer two years ago to make more time to play. I ditched guitar. At this time two years ago, (1:37AM), my "rune night" would have begun and continued well into the afternoon of the next day. The feeling while playing this game is ironically satisfactory. While playing, you think of nothing but the game. Personal and worldy affairs don't mean a thing. In fact, the most important thing on your mind is when and how you're going to get that next combat level. A news report about a bridge collapsing in Minnesota and plunging 50 cars hundereds of feet into the Mississippi river won't phase you. If you're away from runescape, i.e. in school, you find yourself thinking and fantasizing about the game, as if you're going to have sex with an incredibly gorgeous woman when you get home. Oddly enough, after playing, you feel a a feeling of resentment, from yourself and the declining number of people you know, regardless if those people you know play Runescape or not. The addictive quailities in this game are stifling, as simple movements of the finger are ONLY required to play this game. Yet the game is a drug. The fact that goals in runescape are extremely infatuating to achieve and are much more convinient to achieve than real life goals are what make this game addicting. Luckily, the players are in Runescape are starting to decline in terms of maturity and decency, which is helping to draw some players away. But this is not enough. If you want to quit playing, it has to hit you. I sat on my rooftop on a cold Decemeber night at 3AM after playing for hours and reflected on what Runescape does for me. The answer is it doesn't mean a god damn thing, even though those skill goals are drawing you back to the game. The thought of wasting hours to fuel a ridiculous addiction plagued me, and finally i said fuck it. I wanted to go back inside and play the game so badly, and I did. This time i took EVERY item and owned and dropped it. Made a bogus and lengthy password and recovery questions by typing in the answers while closing my eyes and my addiction was cured. That was four months ago. I have not been back, and never will be back. My account is locked by my own doing and will forever be lost. This game came close to ruining my life, had i not taken action. Bottom line: if you are addicted and know you have to quit, do it now while the thought is fresh and before you are thrusted back into the lies of Runescape. Act now, destroy your account, and you will be cured.

I have read several of these comments posted on here and I found the site by searching "runescape ruins your life" in a search engine. Why? Because it has ruined my life and I wanted to know why. I was introduced to it by my now "Ex-Girlfriend's" little brother. Why is she now my ex? A large proportion is to due to this game and the amount of time I spent playing it even when I didn't want to. I am 23 yrs old, I had been playing it for 13 months, first it was little flutters, couple of hours here and there, and then it got serious. For example I would go out for a drink on a Saturday or Sunday night, get in at 3am, my girlfriend would go bed then I'd turn my computer on, select a busy world, relentlessly type "Buying Unids" through to 9am, get less than two hours sleep, then get up, do a couple of hours visiting people (whilst thinking about the game) then get home and log back on. That had turned into my normal routine (not necessarily the drinking). The arguments that this caused between my girlfriend at the time were terrible and my attitude towards her was even worse, all because I wanted to creep up the high scores list..... Which is going to get me where? In this position, left ignoring my life gradually falling apart around me and having to deal the side affects it has on you and your relationships with the others around you. I feel ashamed that it got this serious, and even more ashamed that I used to defend it to my family members. I didn't even admit I played it to my friends, because I knew that it was a pointless non-rewarding "activity" that I had difficulty in controlling. There is no answer for my obsession with this game. Others have commented on this site about "Subliminal Messaging". My inclination is that Jagex is owned and managed by yet another individual who has mastered the art brainwashing/product selling. It has a way of taking over your own thoughts, making you think about runescape on a daily basis, and urges you to log in whenever it is possible. I don't have a PHD or know enough about Brain Washing to fully understand the concepts that it involves, but I do know that day by day my thinking patterns, my routine, my eating and sleeping habits were all affected by playing this game. It is not to say that I have a weak character and I am in no way implying that you/your child or friend does if you/they play. Jagex are masterminds. They have to be to have over 1m paying members, and around 10m free members (the last time I heard). How can a simple game control so many individuals from so many backgrounds? I'm not a fat recluse aged 7-12, I'm not living in my mums basement, I am self employed and work hard in a competitive environment, and I have a strong social circle, It got me... And it certainly got my relationship. I usually proud myself in being a strong minded individual but on this occasion I have been beaten. I did the whole "I'm quitting" thing the other day that everyone seems to think on here is sad, it's not. It's actually a very liberating experience, I kept it low key and I just told one person on my friend list. I gave them every tradable item I could, everything. What did they say to me? "Omg\!Ty\! u dnt knw how much dis means 2me\! u rlly dnt\!\!\!". Disaster. I am now as bad as Jagex. I have fed this young lad's addiction (My Ex's brothers friend). I have given him enough resources to potentially waste about 8 months of his life, and provide Jagex with £25.60 GBP, I know because I worked it out. Guilt is not the word. If you play runescape, your child plays runescape or your friends do and you have read the definitions on this site then open your eyes and understand what everyone is trying to communicate to you. Runescape is a serious health hazard. If you don't play it then don't start. If you do, then stop. If you can see it affecting somebody you know direct them to this site. Do not just take my advice, read other definitions left here by other people. People just don't write these things to pass time, like me they have become trapped in a world that does you no favours at all, and they feel they need to tell others to get out it while they can, as I am doing. I alone can't advise you, I'm not special, and I can't "tele" you to "cammy", but what I can do is advise you to keep reading the advice left on this site, get a grip back on your life and stop sellin "Duel Rings" for 5k a piece..... It will get you no where, and will only cause you problems. Who knows, people may be able to limit there playing time to a few hours a week or just when they are bored, if they can then they are fortunate. Take a good look at this site and re-gain control. The ridiculous amounts of time people (and I have done it) spend on a PC/Laptop could be much better spent. There is more to life than obsessivly pointing and clicking a contraption formerly reffered to as a "Mouse" to reach illusional goals that will not change a thing in your life. Start living again you noob.

A pretty good game, which was created entirely with Java. It's three dimensional. The object of the game is what makes it so good, because the whole point of the game is whatever you want it to be. You can make friends, do quests, or train in various skills, such as mining, smithing, crafting, fishing, woodcutting, etc. The only complaints about this game that I have are that almost everything is limited to members, such as most of the quests, the map space, and alot of other cool stuff. Also, everybody calls each other a noob for some reason. The graphics might also not appeal to all people, but if you look past the graphics, you'll see that its a pretty fun game, but you need to know when to stop playing.

An MMORPG created by Jagex. A game that I was addicted to for about 8 months, but I stopped because it was a stupid waste of time. All you do in Runescape is click on something and your character interacts with it, like clicking an enemy to attack it, clicking a tree to chop it, or clicking a rock to mine it. Its subpar combat system allows lower levels such as 70's take down higher levels such as 100's with ease. The game is full of whiney 12 year olds who constantly look for cyber 'cex' (cex is NOT a misspelling, but the word that people use for sex because the creators of the game, Jagex, blur out pretty much every word in the dictionary. Including poop.) When the 12 year olds pay the girls Runescape money for this 'cex', they are instantly crushed when the girl reveals herself to be a boy and runs off with the money. There are a total of about 30 skills in the game, and each one levels quickly. Until you get to level 25 that is. After 25, it is just constant clicking and clicking while making very little progress. To be level 25 in a stat, you will need less than 10 thousand experience points. To be level 99 in a stat, you will need over 13 million. Combat being the main skill of Runescape, I will give you an example of the monotiny of training it. A favorite monster to train on, Ogres, give around 300 experience each. If you haven't wasted your time getting till around 90 combat or so, each Ogre will take about 1 minute to kill. You do the math yourself. Overall, Runescape is a monotonous game with little to no benefit for the player.

I work frequently, pay my bills, and have plenty of friends...and I play Runescape. To me, the game is quite relaxing...I might just log on to kill a round of blue dragons, netting me 14 dragon bones and 14 dragonhides. Net total of around 4k gold each kill. Then I might just do something else. I have had countless people over to play on my computer network (two computers, two laptops)...and I feel it is extremely rewarding to help them with their characters. Maybe it is something as simple as providing them with 'full iron' equipment to start with. While the simple cows were killing them before, now they are not. Even my little niece loves the game, and it has certainly made her more computer savvy...is that a bad thing? How about the cultural exposure? I have met and talked with people from Australia, England, and Canada...all with different dialects. I'm college educated...I started playing MUDS, it didn't ruin my life...in fact it enhanced my typing speed so much that I easily landed jobs doing data entry. This made me actual money. And think of runescape like 'Economics' 101...it forces you to budget, for if you don't you won't be able to buy that nice shiny whip. You could later apply to be a used car salesperson, because people had attempted to scam you in every possible way, so you became insanely street smart. Do NOT stay on the same skill, or you will burnout fast. Choose a skill like slayer, and stick with that. I invent large chess variants, and I play piano for weddings, and I enjoy runescape...it certainly doesn't make you a loser. My other friend would have webcam chats with girls he met on Runescape...what's wrong with that? I'd say that he's meeting MORE people because of the game. To all you who denigrate this game, please just think more carefully. It is what you make of it. I'm not playing right now because grinding dragon bones gives me carpal tunnel, rofl\!

The game is also plagued by Asian goldfarmers who macro in the game and sell the money to give other players an unfair advantage. The company Jagex tried to stop the autoers, but if you go to yew trees today, you will still see level 3s with asian names macroing. Runescape is heavily plagued by scammers as well. WARNING. This game is severely addicting and will suck you in if you start playing. The game is addicting because once you get extremely good in one skill, you will want to start becoming the best in another skill, and it never ends because the company keeps on adding new skills. Their forum system is extremely strict and controlled, and your posts will be locked, or usually *hidden* if your comment portrays any truth about the game. For example, I was permanently banned from the game because I posted that the player mods are just stupid ban happy 12 year olds that will ban you simply because they are jealous of your stats. If you have a negative thought about the game, do not post it on the forums because it will be hidden and locked within 20 seconds. The highly addicted players have around 300,000,000 exp in the game, which at a rate of 50k exp per hour, gives them a grand total of about 6,000 playing hours. This is the equivalent of about a years paycheck of around 40,000-80,0000 dollars for the average person not enrolled in college. Stay away from Runescape, save your time, your social life, and get a job\!

A widely known MMORPG created by Andrew Gower and Jagex with over 9 million players worldwide. 800,000 of the players have membership and pay roughly 5 dollars a month to gain access to much more than non-paying players can. You control a character in a medieval realm and try to advance skills (woodcutting, mining, magic, you get the idea.). There are quests to complete as well, ranging in difficulty and stupidity. Unlike other games, you can only play as a human, beginning at level three combat and can eventually become the highest possible, level 126. The game is contantly frowned upon by many because of its poor graphics, amount of lag, and requiring simply clicking on random objects to achieve goals. It is also described as being HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, and can steal your life away fairly quickly. My advice: Never play if you haven't yet, you are the lucky ones. If you do play, have LIMITS\! No more than three hours per day. Even that is too much. Always hang out with friends or go to a party (if given the chance) rather than runescape. Play when there is absolutely nothing to do. I play runescape, I follow my rules, and I like my life. I am an adept hockey player, one of the few who have had a 4.0 for many years in school, a golfer, a guitarist, and party enthusiast (involving crazy sex and jackassness). Overall, Runescape can be a rewarding experience when it is your last resort for something to do.

All Tm would talk about is his Runescape character, his smithing level and his "Runescape GF" who we eventually found out was a guy. (I know, gross.) He stopped eating, to the point where he would eat maybe a meal a day up in his room. He stopped washing himself, and the acne that developped was horrendous. He stayed home from school to play. Tim's parents eventually found out what was happening and took away his computer. Tim told us he wanted to kill them. He stole a labtop to fuel his addiction. Tim lost 50 pounds. A good looking guy was now completely hideous. He failed seven subjects on his report card. Eventually, his parents found out about the stolen labtop. They were furious. Tim was kept in his room for two weeks, under supervision to make sure he hadn't smuggled in a labtop. He tried to escape three times. Eventually, we managed to coax him into going cold turkey. Tim was lucky: he only threw away four monthes of his life. He has returned to normal now, and is an Honour roll student and captain of the Soccer team. But there are other people that haven't. Wasn't hard at all. Give the game a shot, and if you already are the ignorant assholes you seem to be, your grades won't change for shit. But if your just the normal go with the flow stereotype, go for it. It's a nice way to kill time, not kill friends.

My account got banned and i made a new one and started to play again and i thought to myself wtf am i doing take a brake and play it again in about 2 years and see if u still like it. So i did this, two years have now passed and i see that this game is a good game but addictive, but very good for yourself if you use it right. Do all thing social and play when your bored and NEVER ON THE WEEKENDS, go outside and play with your friends or girl friends when they ask. After the two years i have started playing again and made a pure with 60 attack and strength and only play for about 4 hours a week at the max. This game is good it teaches you real life skills. I advise to play it, but if you find yourself playing it all day and your parents yelling at you to get of FUCKING LISTEN TO THEM K?. There is no clear goal or point in the game, all you really do is try to get as much experience in each skill as you can, and wear nice expensive rune or dragon armor. Runescape consists of a free world, which is not very large, and a member’s world which is gigantic, and includes more weapons, armor, items, skills, ect. It's only $5 a month to be a member. There seems to be some competition between Runescape and World of Warcraft (WOW), in which most of the people you talk to will say WOW is better. However, WOW is somewhere around $15 a month, there is no "free server" (As far as I know, please correct me if I'm wrong) and takes up a ton of memory on your computer. Runescape seems to be the better alternative because you don't have to go to the store and buy expansion packs for it, and you can play for free if you choose. One big problem with Runescape is that many people create what I call “Auto Noobs”, which are accounts that people make that repeat the same task over, and over, and over again all day long without anyone having to control it. People do this to make millions without having to lift a finger, and it’s really annoying. They are easy to spot, they are almost always very generic, tan shirt, green pants, black hair, and usually under level 5. I advise you never start playing because you won’t be able to stop. Before you know it, you and your kids will call into school and work with ridiculous excuses just so you can play Runescape all day, and let your brains rot for the Hulu aliens to eat.

History-When i originaly started runescape it was ok, their was no members and far less 12year old nerds. The people in the game heped each other out more, the game was a game and people had more fun. Now players dont play for fun. People usually play till they reach a ceratin combat lvl (126) and quit or they gain a level 99 stat. members-you get more "map" size, however you have to pay for the game, you also get some mini games, quests and skills. It makes the game much more addictive. Players-Zezima-RS player that has all stats 99, this guy is a uni student and he obviously a looser with no life as he has 700m xp in the game. Skills-Their is no skill required to play this game, it just needs time, and in regards to construction and herblaw, money. The skills are all second rate except maybe for fletching. One can make money faster per hour just merchanting. Addiction-60% of runescape players are addicted to the game. Frankly, the game should be paying people to play it. The children who play this game frequently have no lives, friends, and take out the anger and rejectment that they experience in their sad lives by berating people randomly on topics such as music, nationality, and level, and crying to their mommies. Runescape has considerably bad graphics, and a series of skills that can be raised based on how much time you sit in front of the computer. Ironically, the people who actually leave their chairs and lead otherwise fullfilling lives are considered inferior to the children who spend their time hudled by the computer, scratching their pre-pudescent genitals and eating cheetos. If you want to play an MMO at least choose one with any quality or class.

Players were lighting 400 fires just to "level up" on crap things like fire building. That skill would be cooler if it was like, Arson or something. You also cannot go around killing everyone that you see. Only weird little goblin thingies that rape sheep while you bake bread and cook shrimp in the middle of the street. I am 17 years old, I have a social life, lots of friends, good grades, and a heathy life. Jagex may be good at brainwashing people, but its the indivdual's choice to continue to play or not. In sum, RS is a dangerous drug. But as drugs go, it's one of the cheaper, less dangerous ones.

Ok, I want to set the record straight that Runescape is not 'gay' and isn't for losers. I started playing two years and 7 months ago, and since that time I have gotten married...go figure. One of my friends set me up on a date with her, but here's the thing...I started playing Runescape with one of his friends, and then we'd all play runescape together in my apartment...it would be a fun thing to do with my friends. Every other activity in my city would cost tons of money, so runescape would be a very fun and inexpensive activity. Had it not been for runescape, it is likely that my friends would not have come over so frequently, hence I may not have met my wife. My wife plays this game too, so we find ourselves chatting alot while playing. One of my favorite pasttimes is going on a walk with my wife and discussing goals on runescape. We will end up walking about 2 miles to get to a Mexican Restaurant where I like ordering margaritas and calculating various goals with her about runescape. Thing is we don't always talk about runescape, but it fills in the gaps nicely when we need it to. Either of us will get a goal on runescape, and we'll go out to a restaurant to celebrate...so wouldn't runescape in fact helping us 'go out more'? Runescape helps keep my math skills up...I do an enormous amount of calculating how much time is needed to attain x goal. There are different methods to get a skill up, so I compare the various methods to arrive at an optimal skill training method. Ancient magics using carralanger teleport gives 112,800 xp per hour, whereas Camelot teleport gives 83,250 xp per hour. But per xp point, carralanger costs a huge amount, so I calculated that casting stun on cows would be more cost efficient, and get me to the goal just as fast as carralanger teleport. Is doing math all the time a bad thing, people?? Sometimes I do calculations based on the game more than the game itself. If you don't play runescape, do you do math that much per day? I bet not. I use spreadsheets to calculate the distribution of runes received from the ZMI alter, entering in all the data from 100+ trips. And that was FUN doing those calculations. If you don't pay to play, don't bother because you will only see about 10% of the areas, use 30% of the items, and will be crowded with a bunch of weird people who follow you throughout the game, and if you ignore them, they will say you are botting and report you, and you will be suspended for a certain amount of time or even forever. People there are extremely rude, even on the members forums. Say anything, talk about yourself, they might call you ugly even when they never seen you. You could be spending 10 year of your life to fully complete the game, if you play every single hour of your life. The game is repetitive. A lot of things require you to go on the "wilderness" where other people can attack you and kill you. You keep about 3/10 items you wear or hold, and before you notice, you lost your best armor or wasted your time traveling all the way there for nothing. All the servers are completely crowded, even when they make new ones. The best training spots are always taken by mages who take your kills because they can cast magic spells and kill monsters first, which spawn about once every 2 minutes. Training is completely boring and hopeless. The game gets boring, you won't know what to do, and nothing is available for you if you don't pay. So if you ask me, it's not worth it.

For a while, people compared RuneScape to World of Warcraft, saying RuneScape was just a knockoff. Then, JaGeX released a graphic update and system update, with more content. Now, RuneScape is a well-known MMORPG with impressive graphics (for a MMORPG); currently the most popular. They even got into the Guinness Book of World Records. In my opinion, RuneScape is easy to get attatched to. You should only play if you can easily quit things with no problem. I honestly still get on it mildly and I've been playing RuneScape for about 2 years in total. There's just something very unique about RuneScape. It is filled with young kids who lie about their age, though. And most people get a little too serious with gameplay, or they just roleplay - which is queer in my perspective, but whatever.

Runescape is a bad game with no obvious storyline, you start off at lvl 3 and work up to lvl 126, there are also non combat skills suck as woodcutting, farming cooking etc... The gameplay is bad with a bad combat system, point and click. The graphics are terrible with laag and when players walk they look like they are gliding on the floor. Runescape's community mainly consists of 12-16 year olds and there are alot of addicted people and stuck up people who play this game. You have access to many minigames, over 20 skills and only so few actual things to do that are entertaining. Due to the lack of any form of creativity from the Jagex Studios, many of the things in their game involve WoW knock-offs, ethnic stereotypeing, hallucinogenic 12 year old plot engineering and of course lack of physical limitations and logic. Most originality is composed of the Japanese college students with too much time on their hands. This is literally traceable everywhere. Even from the most European influenced culture there manages to be easily identified as "Made in Japan". In example there are axes the size of surfboards that weigh in at 200 pounds, and a Sword possible bigger than weighs more. Each of them swung like they are feathers. The game is a Java browser game, meaning the game is limited to the amount of graphics it can display without killing your computer. a 2000 person limit is made for each server, in this case there are 160 servers. Therefore, 320000 people can play at once. There are many people with more than one account, as if one is not enough. These people who do this have failed to compete and need to re-try their attempt at getting things right fail at life as well. The skills, so they call them are mindless clicking on an object hopeing for some event to take place. Even the simple process of cooking stuff takes more than 3 clicks. The game is populated by people who are too bored to do anything else, along with 12 year old children, and people in obvious need of fresh air and a life. This calls for a needless censorship system. Capitalism and Socialsim overtake the game's supposed economy, despite there being a item exchange area. The economy has dependence on it's already dead re-salvaged Player Versus Player Interface (PVP). While on topic, unlike most games where you die and don't loose anything in items, you loose everything you carry with an exception of 3 or 4 items. This sometimes is very common in the incredibly stupid population of "runescapers". Above all, this game's biggset challenge is quitting the game. The game lures you with temptation and addictions. Unfortunate for some, they have been envoloped since 1999, and loose their lives to runescape as if it was World of Warcraft.
